The Rural City of Murray Bridge will be home to the world’s largest safari experience outside Africa with Zoos South Australia announcing a $40m expansion of Monarto Zoo.
The redevelopment will encompass a five-star luxury resort, as well as glamping facilities, and will be renamed ‘Monarto Safari Park’.
The resort, to be built by Australian businessman and private investor Gerry Ryan OAM, will also include conference, function and restaurant spaces.
The expansion announcement follows a recent commitment by the State and Federal Governments to build a new Visitor Centre at the zoo signalling a major economic, employment and tourism boost for the region.
It is estimated that construction of the luxury resort alone will generate $20.4m of Gross Regional Product and more than 220 full-time positions including 72 direct and 151 indirect jobs.
An additional 90 full-time jobs are also predicted to be created on an ongoing basis when the resort and Visitors Centre open to the public.
Resort construction is expected to begin in 2020 and is due to be completed in late 2021.
